From Exam to Interview- Part I (Tips from IITians on how to qualify for IIT to learn design)

This is a summary of notes I took while listening to an awesome podcast named as "Styrofoam" created by IDC (IIT Bombay) students to assist other design students. Even if you read these notes, I recommend that you listen to the original podcast series on Soundcloud because it is a lot of fun.

Tips before and during CEED

  • Completely solve and evaluate the previous year's paper with solutions. Learn what to expect during the exam. Recognize where you went wrong.
  • Display the question paper on the computer screen in order to get used to the exam environment.
  • When it comes to part A,  don't take negative marking lightly. Only solve if you're sure.  Don't just go with the first logical solution that comes to mind.
  • Keep a wristwatch with you. *Pro tip : You can carry a clay eraser or a any new eraser to solve cube or dice related problems quickly.
  • For Part B, summarize the question to make it easier to understand. Read through all and get your mind over them.
  • Think on paper. Capture every ideas about the solutions.
  • Practice memory drawing and sketching of everyday objects and scenes.
  • Begin putting together a portfolio while studying for the exam. Include all sketches and scraps in your portfolio to demonstrate your willingness to learn during the interview.
  • Get out of town early. Bring a water bottle with you. Find the restroom. Carry fewer stationery items. If the center is close by, familiarize yourself with it.
